The Time I Became Famous for Taking a Picture of a Public Toilet

Walking with the flow of the crowd surrounding the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, India, I turned the corner and saw a large billboard labeling the public toilet. My first thought was, “I didn’t think India had public toilets.” And my second thought was, “Hey, that’s Ron Swanson!”

Over the men’s restroom was a photo of a man with perfectly coiffed hair and a large mustache. There was no doubt that this was an image of Nick Offerman’s iconic character from Parks and Recreation, Ron Swanson.

I laughed and laughed and then took a picture.

Back at the hotel I posted my hilarious find on a facebook.

A few minutes later, a friend of mine messaged me asking if I would make my status public, so he could share it with a friend who went to school with Nick so that he might share it wit his old classmare. I happily obliged.

In less than 24 hours, Ken Tremendous, the alter ego of Parks and Recreation producer, Michael Schur, had tweeted the image to Nick Offerman who responded “#Namaste”

I was happy that Nick had seen the image, but bummed I hadn’t received any credit. A few tweets later, and I was given credit.

The next day, an online journalist messaged me asking if she could use my name and the toilet picture for a story. I agreed. Within a week, the story of Nick Offerman’s image being used to label a public toilet was all over the internet.

Now my name and Nick Offerman’s will forever be connected all because I took a photo of a public toilet.
